We’re delighted to share a new review of The Cake from Theresa Bertram at BroadwayWorld.
Bertram calls the production “a delicious blend of humor and thought-provoking conversation” and “the perfect date night,” describing it as “an evening that will have you laughing, thinking, and talking long after you leave the theatre.”
She also praises the decision to stage the play in ACT II, writing that “having this particular play in their smaller area was a genius idea.” Scenic designer Danny Grace’s work receives a memorable shoutout as well, with Bertram calling the painted floor “a work of art.”
Director Heather Dupree is recognized for approaching the material “with remarkable sensitivity,” while allowing each scene to unfold naturally. Bertram writes that Dupree’s trust in the cast results in performances that feel “genuine, relatable, and deeply human.”
The cast receives warm praise throughout the review. Jeff Bailey brings Tim “an easygoing charm that feels incredibly authentic,” LeAnne Roberson gives Jen a hopeful and heartfelt presence, and Melody Small portrays Macy’s support “with warmth and grace.”
Bertram reserves her strongest praise for Natalie Canerday as Della, writing that she “effortlessly balances laugh-out-loud comedy with sincere vulnerability.” She calls Canerday “one of Arkansas’ finest actresses,” adding:
“She can make you burst into laughter one minute and quietly break your heart the next.”
We’re grateful to Theresa Bertram and BroadwayWorld for this thoughtful response to the production.
