"A Slice of Reality": The First Review of “The Cake”

There is something especially meaningful about seeing a production reflected back through the eyes of an audience member. Our first review of The Cake is in, and we are deeply grateful for the care, thoughtfulness, and generosity Caleb Patton brought to his response.

He writes:

“We are incredibly fortunate to have a space like Argenta that is willing to take risks on contemporary scripts that speak directly to the complexities of the Southern experience. It is through these stories that we begin to see ourselves, our neighbors, and our own communities with a renewed sense of clarity and compassion.”

That is at the heart of why we wanted to produce The Cake. Bekah Brunstetter’s play invites us into a story that is funny, tender, complicated, and deeply human. It asks us to sit with people whose experiences and beliefs may differ from our own—and to remain open to the possibility of connection.

Caleb also praised director Heather Dupree, writing:

“Ultimately, Heather Dupree has crafted a production that feels profoundly vital to our current moment in Little Rock and communities found throughout the country.”

Heather and the entire company have approached this story with extraordinary care, curiosity, and generosity. We are thrilled to see each member of the cast recognized for the specificity and humanity they bring to the stage:

Natalie Canerday as Della: “The spine of this production."
Jeff Bailey as Tim: “An exercise in restraint and empathy.”
LeAnne Roberson as Jen: “A performance of immense bravery.”
Melody Small as Macy: “Sharp, necessary clarity.”
Brandon Paul Eells as George: “Provides a brilliant, satirical foil to the heaviness of the main plot.”

The review also offered a wonderful vote of confidence in the work ahead:

“If The Cake is indicative of the standard for Argenta Contemporary Theatre’s upcoming season, we are in for a remarkable rest of the year.”

We could not be more proud of this company—or more grateful to the audiences who have already filled ACT II with laughter, reflection, and conversation.

Caleb concludes with an enthusiastic recommendation:

“I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in challenging, poignant, and impeccably acted drama to secure their tickets immediately. The house was at capacity last night, and given the caliber of the work, I anticipate a sold-out run.”
