Another great review is in for Hands on a Hardbody!
Writing for BroadwayWorld, Theresa Bertram came to ACT ready for an unusual musical about ten people standing around a pickup truck. She left completely invested in who would be the last one standing.
What begins as a wonderfully strange competition becomes something much deeper as we discover why each contestant needs that truck—and what winning could mean for their lives.
“Being right there completely engulfed me in the story.”
Theresa experienced the production from our VIP Immersive Seats onstage, where the audience becomes part of the world of the competition. Rather than feeling like she was watching a musical from the sidelines, she describes feeling like a spectator who had actually shown up at the dealership to see who would drive away with the truck.
And the deeper she got into the competition, the more the truck became about something beyond winning a prize—representing freedom, security, independence, opportunity, and the hope that life might finally change for the better.
The production itself also earned plenty of praise:
“This production definitely impressed me.”
Throughout the review, Theresa celebrates the entire cast and creative team, highlighting the strength of the ensemble, individual performances, direction, music, choreography, design, and the technical work that brings the world of the competition to life.
She even gives a shoutout to the full-size Nissan Hardbody at the center of the production, noting that seeing how the truck was assembled gave her a new appreciation for just how integral it is to everything happening onstage.
But perhaps our favorite description comes at the end of her review:
